:: Clinical Hypnotherapy

Clinical Hypnotherapy is the art of helping a client to create the changes they desire. This is achieved by assisting the client to go into an 'altered state' of awareness, in order to bypass the conscious, critical mind and to communicate with the sub-conscious mind where emotional and physical responses come from.

People naturally go into altered states on a daily basis. This could be when they go into a day-dream while they are driving, or even in a normal conversation, when telling a story about something that happened a while ago, they are in that story, and not fully present in the now. That is an altered state. Clinical hypnotherapy is a safe, controlled and effective way of helping a person go into an altered state in order to achieve a desired positive change.

Hypnotherapy is effective for modifying behavior, reducing emotional distress and anxiety, for relaxation, increasing motivation, addressing stress-related illness, pain management, habit changing (i.e. stop smoking or weight control, stopping nail biting,), addressing past traumas, resolving internal conflicts, and personal development.

As a Christian I am very conscious of the need for integrity and for practising in a spiritually safe manner. My style of clinical hypnotherapy is based on relaxation and guided imagery, often incorporating Gestalt style therapy as well, and is guided by the Holy Spirit. You are aware of everything that is being said.

It is essential that you go to an ethical practitioner.

:: Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)

neuro linguistic programming

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) Developed by Richard Bandler and John Grindler in the 1980's, Neuro-Linguistic Programming is the science of how the brain codes learning and experience. This coding affects all communication and behaviour. It affects how you learn and how you experience the world around you.

It is a key to reaching goals and achieving excellence.

NLP provides tools and skills for the development of excellence, and establishes a system of empowering beliefs and presuppositions about our thoughts, our communication and effective change.

Why hypnosis or NLP?

Our habits and reactions are stored in the unconscious and we are not often aware of them or able to control them. NLP and/or Hypnosis helps make the changes at a subconscious level where the habit, problem or troublesome memory resides. The subconscious is also very creative and powerful and once given new and empowering suggestions that you have agreed to, is then backing up your conscious decision to change.

Unconscious mind means anything that is not currently in your consciousness.

Your unconscious mind is the source of all learning, all behaviour and all change. Let us look at each one of these individually:

LEARNING: Your unconscious mind is the part of you that learns, not your conscious mind. Now, you may have thought that you learned consciously in the past, and although your learning has to go through the conscious mind, it is your unconscious mind that remembers everything. Everything, once learned, resides in the unconscious mind.

BEHAVIOUR: all behaviour is generated at the unconscious level. Think about walking. You just put one foot in front of the other, don't you? When you do, however, you don't think about it. You just do it. Another example: the last time you drove to work, how conscious of it were you? Do you remember the whole trip? Or do you remember none of it?

CHANGE: Think of a bad habit you wanted to change in the past. Was it easy? Probably not. Most people find it hard to change a bad habit. For them it's something that takes time. Many people go on doing the same old things over and over, year after year and complain about it. If change isn't that easy for us, it is simply because we aren't fully in rapport with our unconscious mind. In fact we feel the conflict between our conscious thought to be different and the unconscious habits. Hence we often don’t stick to our New Year’s resolutions.

So as we do the work to change the unconscious programming, then the emotional reactions and behaviours will change within the conscious level.

Are you currently on a weight control diet and finding you lack the motivation to stick to the programme? Hypnosis and/or NLP will help you get back in control.

Unmotivated to exercise? Hypnosis and/or NLP will help you get motivated and enjoy it.

:: Clean Language and Clean Space

clean space

Developed by David Grove in the 1980's and 1990's, Clean Language is a questioning technique that is used especially in psychotherapy and coaching.

Clean Language is optimized to have the client discover and develop personal symbols and metaphors, without contamination or distortion of the developing metaphor landscape through the way the questions are put.

Clean Space is having the client move from space to space to experience the emotional effects of a different space and state. And using Clean Language in that space it is very impactful in effecting change.

:: Gestalt

gestalt

Gestalt Therapy was developed by Fitz Perls in the 1940's and 1950's.

Gestalt Therapy is an existential and experiential psychotherapy that focuses on the individual's experience in the present moment, the therapist-client relationship, the environmental and social contexts in which these things take place, and the self-regulating adjustments people make as a result of the overall situation.

It emphasizes personal responsibility.

:: Transactional Analysis

Developed by Eric Berne in the late 1950's. Transactional Analysis is an integrative approach to the theory of psychology and psychotherapy. Integrative because it has elements of psychoanalytic, humanist and cognitive approaches.

The initial introduction to Transactional Analysis involves the understanding of the Parent, Adult, Child ego states. The Parent ego state has two parts – Critical Parent and Nurturing Parent. The Child ego state also has two parts – Adaptive Child and Free Child. Parent is our 'Taught' concept of life Adult is our 'Thought' concept of life Child is our 'Felt' concept of life

When we communicate it is from one of these ego states, to an ego state in the other person.. Our feelings at the time determine which one we use, and at any time something can trigger a shift from one state to another. When we respond, we are also doing this from one of the three states, and it is in the analysis of these stimuli and responses that the essence of Transactional Analysis lies.

:: Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT)

Developed by Albert Ellis in the 1950's, he devised the ABC model of REBT.

'A' refers to whatever started things off: a circumstance, event or experience - or just thinking about something which has happened.

This triggers off thoughts ('B’), which in turn create a reaction - feelings and behaviours - ('C').

This is extended to include sections for setting a goal or new desired effect ('E'), disputing and changing beliefs ('D'), and, finally, further action to put those changes into practice ('F').

That final step is important. You will get there faster when you put into action what you have changed in your mind.

:: Narrative Therapy

narrative therapy

Developed by Michael White and David Epston in the 1970's, Narrative Therapy is a form of psychotherapy using narrative, and externalising the problem.

It is used for many issues, but is most famous for working with anorexia nervosa, ADHA, and schizophrenia.

A specific style of conversation with therapeutic questioning.

:: Interactive Drawing Therapy (IDT)

Developed by Russell Withers from New Zealand in the early 1990's, Interactive Drawing Therapy (IDT) uses right-brain drawing and writing techniques to complement and extend the more common left-brain talking and cognitive processes.

By externalising onto the page, the clients change their perceptions about themselves, their experiences, and their world of possibilities.

:: Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is an emotional, needle free version of acupuncture that is based on new discoveries regarding the connection between your body's subtle energies, your emotions, and your health.

EFT has been reported successful in thousands of cases covering a huge range of emotional, health and performance issues.

It often works where nothing else will.

:: Eye Movement Densitisation and Refocussing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is a powerful new psychotherapy technique which has been very successful in helping people who suffer from trauma, anxiety, panic, disturbing memories, post traumatic stress and many other emotional problems.

Until recently, these conditions were difficult and time-consuming to treat. EMDR is considered a breakthrough therapy because of its simplicity and the fact that it can bring quick and lasting relief for most types of emotional distress.

EMDR is the most effective and rapid method for healing PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) as shown by extensive scientific research studies.

The EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation, right/left eye movement, or tactile stimulation, which repeatedly activates the opposite sides of the brain, releasing emotional experiences that are "trapped" in the nervous system. This assists the neurophysiological system, the basis of the mind/body connection, to free itself of blockages and reconnect itself.

As troubling images and feelings are processed by the brain via the eye-movement patterns of EMDR, resolution of the issues and a more peaceful state are achieved.

How Does It Work?

The therapist works gently with the client and asks him/her to revisit the traumatic moment or incident, recalling feelings surrounding the experience, as well as any negative thoughts, feelings and memories. The therapist then holds her fingers about eighteen inches from the clients face and begins to move them back and forth like a windshield wiper. The client tracks the movements as if watching ping pong. The more intensely the client focuses on the memory, the easier it becomes for the memory to come to life. As quick and vibrant images arise during the therapy session, they are processed by the eye movements, resulting in painful feelings being exchanged for more peaceful, loving and resolved feelings. Issues that can be helped by EMDR: loss of a loved one injury of a loved one car accident fire work accident assault robbery rape natural disaster injury illness witness to violence childhood abuse victims of violent crimes performance and test anxiety trauma depression anxiety or panic phobias fears childhood trauma physical abuse sexual abuse post traumatic stress bad temper overwhelming fears panic attacks low self-esteem relationship problems brooding or worrying trouble sleeping Symptoms helped by EMDR: High anxiety and lack of motivation Depression Memories of a traumatic experience Fear of being alone Unrealistic feelings of guilt and shame Fear of being alone Difficulty in trusting others Relationship problems

:: Re-Emergence Therapy (RET)

Re-Emergence Therapy (RET) was developed by Pauline (Po Lin) Kam in 2007.

Re-Emergence Therapy is a unique process which has the power to bring about amazing transformations in clients through direct communication with their innate consciousness.

This direct communication enables the practitioner, through subtle use of directed symbolic imagery and focus, to return the client to a harmonious and constructive state of being: thereby addressing and eliminating the limitations of presenting issues.

:: Time Line Therapy

Created by Tad James in 1988, Time Line Therapy takes you back to the time of trauma and offers specific healing strategies in order to change the emotional responses to the event, thus bringing release - healing the past, learning to live in the present, and moving towards the future. You are a collection of your memories. Memories are recorded and stored as we age and with time they have more and more influence on us. Our Time Line is the index to the memory encoding of the unconscious mind, and it is usually wholly unconscious.

:: Imago Relationship Therapy

Developed by Harville Hendrix PhD and Helen LaKelly Hunt, PhD, based on their own experience of relationships, including their own marriage and Harville’s clinical work with couples, Imago Relationship Therapy was outlined in the best selling books “Getting the Love You Want – A Guide for Couples” and “Keeping the Love You Find – A Guide for Singles” by Harville Hendrix.

:: Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy is a body therapy developed by Tom Bowen – an osteopath from Australia in the 1970’s. A number of people trained with Tom Bowen and they have since taken the knowledge to the rest of the world.

It is a series of precise gentle moves on the muscles and connective tissues along the body using the thumb and fingers. The treatment is very gentle, subtle and relaxing, enabling the body to restore itself, relieving tension and reducing pain.

This therapy is non intrusive, and amazingly effective. It is often sought as a last resort by people, when they have been told that they have to learn to live with their physical pain.
